Biographical Note/Administrative History

Belva Davis is one of the first female African American television and radio journalists. She is the recipient of eight Emmy Awards as well as lifetime achievement awards from the International Women’s Media Foundation, the National Association of Black Journalists, and the Northern California chapter of the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences. Her work has appeared on stations in Oakland and throughout the Bay Area including KPIX-TV, KRON-TV, KTVU, KNEW, KQED, KDIA, and KSAN, as well as nationally through PBS. Davis’s website highlights her coverage of the:

"most explosive stories of the era, including the Berkeley student protests, the birth of the Black Panthers, the Peoples Temple cult that ended in the mass suicides at Jonestown, the assassinations of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, the onset of the AIDS epidemic -- and from Africa, the terrorist attacks that first put Osama bin Laden on the FBI’s Most Wanted List." ( http://www.belvadavis.com/about, last accessed 2015 April 29)

Davis served the BFHFI as a volunteer from 1975-1993 in a variety of official and vital roles in addition to serving unofficially as an advisor and consultant. Her known roles were as follows:

William Moore is a photojournalist. When Moore was hired as a television news cameraman for KTVU (Oakland, California) in 1968, he became the first African American news cameraman to work full-time for commercial television in California. His work includes coverage of the O.J. Simpson murder trial, the murders of San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, and anti-war and civil rights demonstrations from the late 1960s through the 1970s. He has also served as an adjunct professor at Ohlone College in Fremont.

Belva Davis and William Moore are both active philanthropists.

Arrangement

This collection is organized into the following four series:
  • Series 1. Black History Month Celebration production materials;
  • Series 2. BFHFI audiovisual recordings;
  • Series 3. BFHFI video library;
  • Series 4. Audiovisual recordings--Content undetermined

Scope and Content Note

The Belva Davis and William Moore Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame Collection contains audiovisual recordings of BFHFI events hosted between 1978 and 1993 as well as text-based documents generated during the planning and production of the 2nd and 18th annual BFHFI Black History Month Celebration in 1975 and 1991.

The audiovisual recordings include footage of the various events comprising the Black History Month Celebration including the annual film symposium, film and lecture series, film competition awards ceremony, celebrity dinner and dance gala, and the Oscar Micheaux Awards Ceremony. The footage also includes backstage interviews with a number of notable African American filmmakers and artists such as Gordon Park, Richard Pryor, Julie Dash, Jim Brown, Diahann Carroll, Sinbad, Sidney Poitier, and many others. Footage before 1981 is sparse and consists of one video reel from 1978, three videocassette that appear to be from 1980, and several dubs containing brief excerpts from 1975. A number of the videocassette recordings are also presumed to be dubs or edited versions of the open reel video tapes.

The majority of the text-based materials document the production of the 2nd and 18th annual celebrations and are a mix of administrative documents, Davis's notes, promotional materials, correspondence (particularly from the 1975 ceremony), and scripts and rundowns with revisions. A few miscellaneous items from other years are also included.

Content

The descriptions provided on the labels of these videocassettes do not provide enough information to enable BFC/A staff to confidentially identify their content although many of them seem to contain recordings of Davis's work as a producer at the KRON and KTVU television stations during the 1980s. As the videocassettes are digitized and reviewed, additional information will be provided. Contact staff for the list of transcribed labels.
