Biographical Note

Born December 15, 1922, in Buffalo, New York, Elliott Baker graduated from Indiana University in 1943 with a B.S. in business. Following a short professional baseball appearance with the Cincinnati Reds, Baker joined the United States Army and served as an infantry rifleman until discharged in 1946. His writing career began with playwriting, eventually having a number of plays produced in the new medium of television on both CBS and NBC. His first novel, A Fine Madness, was published in 1964 by G.P. Putnam. It was subsequently made into a film with the screenplay by Elliott Baker and starring Sean Connery and Joanne Woodward.

Scope and Content Note

The Baker, E. mss., ca. 1958-2003, consists primarily of the correspondence and writings of Elliott Baker. Correspondents in the collection include Elliott Baker, Tom Bethell, Charles Davenport Champlin, Edward T. Chase, Claud Cockburn, Bryan Forbes, Claude Gallimard, Harvey Slom Ginsberg, Peter Israel, Irvin Kershner, Norman Mailer, Charlton Ogburn, Margaret Rutherford, Gary Taylor, Gore Vidal, Ivan von Auw, William Carlos Williams and Elizabeth (Springer) Wrigley.

Other items in the collection include three photographs: Elliott Baker in London, Elliott Baker with Robert Frost, 1958, and Elliott Baker with Sean Connery and Joanne Woodward while shooting the film, A Fine Madness October, 1965; and a video taped interview with Baker by Skip E. Lowe for his program "Skip Lowe Looks at Hollywood."

Writings present include: And We Were Young; Clark and Myrna; Confectionaries; Delia; Doctor Lopez; Ebenezer; Klynt's Law; The Movies, The Monks and Colonel Mix; The Penny Wars; Pocock & Pitt; Unhealthful Air; Unrequited Loves; and When the Flowers Died.
