Abstract
The Dunkin mss., 1942-1977, consists of the papers of librarian and library science professor Paul Shaner Dunkin, 1905-1975.

Access Restrictions

Student correspondence, evaluations, and theses-related materials in boxes 2 and 3 are restricted and may not be used.

Biographical Note

Dunkin received both his Ph.D. in Classics and B.S. in Library Science from the University of Illinois. He worked at the Folger Shakespeare Library from 1937 to 1959, becoming chief of technical services in 1950. He joined the faculty of Graduate School of Library Service at Rutgers University in 1959 and taught there until his retirement in 1971. Dunkin wrote many papers on cataloging and classification, as well as several books including How to Catalog a Rare Book (1951, 1973) and Bibliography: Tiger or Fat Cat (1975). He was also an active member of the American Library Association, serving as assistant editor and eventually editor of ALA’s Library Resources and Technical Services, as well as serving on the ALA Council and many other committees.

Scope and Content Note

The Dunkin mss., ca. 1960-1974, consist of the papers of librarian and library science professor Paul Shaner Dunkin, 1905-1975. Included is correspondence with students, other faculty, professional journals and organizations, and some family letters. Also present are manuscripts of some of the articles written by Professor Dunkin, course syllabi and lectures, and offprints of articles by and about him.
