The Curle mss. IV, 1901-1968, consists
of the papers of author, traveler and bibliophile Richard Curle, 1883-1968.
Access Restrictions
This collection is open for research.
Biographical Note
In his early career Richard Curle, 1883-1968, wrote leaders for such newspapers as
the
Pretoria News (South Africa),
The Rangoon Times (Burma), and
The Daily
Mail
(London). He also wrote articles for other newspapers and magazines,
short stories, and books of fiction and non-fiction. In 1912 Curle was introduced to
Joseph Conrad and, as a consequence of their long-standing friendship, much of
Curle's writings and correspondence with colleagues and friends reflects his
considerable knowledge of Conrad and his works.
Arrangement
The collection is organized into the following series: I. Correspondence; II.
Diaries; III. Writings; IV. Miscellaneous; V. Photographs; VI. Printed.
Scope and Content Note
The Curle mss. IV, 1901-1968, consists of the papers of author, traveler and
bibliophile Richard Curle, 1883-1968.
Along with letters from other correspondents, there are also many letters from his
son Adam who was raised by Curle's ex-wife Cordelia Fisher Curle after their divorce
in 1922.
The writings include short stories and novels; introductions to books on Conrad,
Thomas Hardy and other subjects; and other non-fiction works reflecting Curle's
interest in such subjects as natural history, traveling, and book collecting. The
collection also contains his diaries dating from 1942-1968 and photographs of
himself, family and friends. The miscellaneous section contains personal papers,
such as financial, medical and divorce documents, as well as materials pertaining to
friends and family including Joseph Conrad, James Stevens-Cox, Cicely Veronica
Wedgwood and his brother, James Herbert Curle. Printed materials include an
extensive file of clippings of his leaders from the above mentioned newspapers and
others, several magazines containing articles by him, clippings of reviews of his
books, and articles about him.
