Biographical Note

Richard Curle, 1883-1968, was an author, traveler and bibliophile. In his early career he wrote leaders for such newspapers as the Pretoria News (South Africa), The Rangoon Times (Burma), and The Daily Mail (London). He also wrote articles for other newspapers and magazines, short stories, and books of fiction and non-fiction. In 1912 Curle was introduced to Joseph Conrad and, as a consequence of their long-standing friendship, much of Curle's writings and correspondence with colleagues and friends reflects his considerable knowledge of Conrad and his works.

Scope and Content Note

The Curle mss. III, 1904-1967, consists primarily of letters to author Richard Curle, 1883-1968, from Lady Margaret Alice Lilly (de Windt) Brooke, ranee of Sarawak, 1849-1936; bibliographer Nigel Maxwell; and journalist John Mackinnon Robertson, 1856-1933. Margaret of Sarawak's letters date 1923-1930 and consist primarily of social notes and family news, but also with comments on author William Henry Hudson about whom Curle was preparing a book, and on Joseph Conrad. Nigel Maxwell's correspondence, 1963-1967, concerns the preparation and publication of his Dictionary of the works of Joseph Conrad and includes some copies of Curle's letters to him offering advice and corrections. Robertson's letters are generally of a literary or personal nature with frequent comments on Curle's writings and on Conrad and Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev as writers. Typescript copies of Joseph Conrad's letters to Richard Curle, 1912-1924, complete the collection.
