Scope and Content Note

The Pease mss., 1891–1908, consists primarily of letters from author Frank Thomas Bullen, 1857–1915, to the editor of The Morning Mercury , New Bedford, Massachusetts, Zephaniah Walter Pease, 1861–. Many of the letters discuss works of Bullen's that are about to be published or the reception that his works are receiving both in terms of critiques and sales. He also writes about his family, his ill health, and his unfavorable views regarding the rudeness of Americans, especially of the upper classes.

Other correspondents in the collection are Percy Sutherland Bullen (Frank Bullen's cousin and U.S. foreign correspondent with the London Daily Telegraph ), and English literary agent A.P. Watt. The first letter in the file, however, is written to Pease by an apparent hometown friend living and working in London in 1891. Bullen’s first letter to Pease is in 1899.

The collection also contains an untitled manuscript signed by Frank T. Bullen regarding "…the approaching centenary of the New Bedford Mercury…," a newspaper clipping titled "Cape Pigeons and Whalebirds: Superstitions Connected With Them By Sailors…" written by Bullen; a magazine article about Bullen by Charles Middleton; a pamphlet "Fifty Years on The Morning Mercury: New Bedford, Mass: 1880–1930: A Reminiscence" by Pease; and three photographs.
