Biographical Note

Christian Edward Detmold, 1810-1887, was a civil engineer born in Hanover, Germany. After an extensive career in the United States in railroads, iron manufacturing, foundation work on Fort Sumter, and work with the Crystal Palace of New York City in 1853, he spent much time in Europe for his health. While there he engaged in the writings of this collection.

Scope and Content Note

The Detmold mss., 1874-1882, consists of the papers of Christian Edward Detmold, 1810-1887, a civil engineer born in Hanover, Germany. The papers are his translation from the Italian of the historical, political, and diplomatic writings of Niccolo Machiavelli (published in 4 volumes by J.R. Osgood of Boston in 1882), four miscellaneous pieces in French and English, and Un Disappointment Heureux (fiction).
