Abstract
The Scott mss., 1817-1937, consists of the papers of Emmet Hoyt Scott, 1842-1924, railroadman, lumberman, manufacturer, and mayor of LaPorte, Indiana, and his father, Wiley Huntington Scott, 1796-1872, farmer and hotelkeeper of Nineveh, New York. Included also is a small amount of correspondence, 1884-1937, of Emmet Scott, 1873-1937, son of Emmet Hoyt Scott.

Biographical Note

Career of Emmet Hoyt Scott: born Broome County, New York, July 20, 1842; son of Wiley Huntington and Aseneth (Locke) Scott; taught school, Oswego, New York, December 1862-February 1863; employee in joint express office of the Adams & American Express Company, Centralia, Illinois, March-September, 1863; assisted father, September 1863-August 1864; construction department, Albany and Susquehanna Railroad, August 1864-February 1867; superintendent, construction and operating departments, Chicago, Cincinnati and Louisville Railroad Company, building a line from LaPorte to Peru, Indiana, 1867-1869; lumber industry, East Saginaw, Michigan, 1869-1887; partner, Niles & Scott, manufacturers of wheels for agricultural implements and vehicles, 1876-1902; secretary-treasurer of Saginaw land, brown stone, and copper mining company; and the Saginaw Copper Company, 1877; president of the Lac La Belle Company, Munising, Michigan, organized to buy, manufacture and dispose of timber and products thereof, and to purchase, hold, or sell the lands connected therewith, 1894-1906; began development of Munising, Michigan, and was general manager of the Munising Railway built from Munising to Little Lake to connect with the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, 1895; president of the Island Coal Company, 1897; mayor of LaPorte, Indiana, 1889-1894; toured South America, January-March, 1911; on European agricultural tour, June-August, 1912; visited Central America, January-March, 1922; owned real estate and farms in Indiana and Michigan; died on June 20, 1924, at LaPorte, Indiana.

On December 29, 1870, married Mary Relief Niles, 1839-1916, daughter of John Barron Niles. Children: Mary Polke, 1871-1873; Emmet, 1873-1937; Margaret, 1875-1884; Fanny, 1877-1979; Sarah Polke, 1880-1885; Katherine, 1881-1888.

Scope and Content Note

The Scott mss., 1817-1937, consists of the papers of Emmet Hoyt Scott, 1842-1924, railroadman, lumberman, manufacturer, and mayor of LaPorte, Indiana, and his father, Wiley Huntington Scott, 1796-1872, farmer and hotelkeeper of Nineveh, New York. Included also is a small amount of correspondence, 1884-1937, of Emmet Scott, 1873-1937, son of Emmet Hoyt Scott.

The Emmet Hoyt Scott papers consists of business and family correspondence, including unbound letters and 67 letter copy books; diaries; a typescript of his autobiography, which he was writing at the time of his death and which goes through 1888; financial materials, such as account books, memorandum books, and bank books; articles of association and minutes of director's meetings of the Nester Land and Mining Company, Marquette, Michigan and of the Lac La Belle Company, Munising, Michigan.

The family correspondence includes letters from Scott to his wife when he was away on business and on his agricultural tour of Europe in 1912; correspondence with his son, Emmet, on business matters when E.H. Scott was away from LaPorte, 1911, 1912, and 1922; correspondence with his daughter, Fanny (Scott) Rumely, while she was a student at Smith College and during her residence in New York, 1897-1924; and correspondence with relatives in New York state, Massachusetts, Michigan, Illinois, and Washington state, 1861-1924. Two brothers of E.H. Scott, Arthur Lee Scott and Leroy Linn Scott, were in the service during the Civil War and the papers contain letters from them on camp activities, 1861-1865.

Correspondents represented in the collection include John Judson Bagley, Rogers Birnie, Robert Holland Duell, Charles Fargo, Albert Lindley Lee, Electus Backus Litchfield, John Barron Niles, Isamu Gilmour Noguchi, John Meredith Read, Edward Aloysius Rumely, Augustus William Smith, Harlan Ingersoll Smith, and Horatio Governeur Wright. Consult the Manuscripts Index in the Library for dates of letters of individual correspondents.

Included also in the collection are farm account books of Mary Relief (Niles) Scott, wife of E.H. Scott, and a record book, June 14, 1859-September 8, 1924, of the LaPorte Society of the New Church, LaPorte, Indiana, which contains a history of the church, minutes, constitutions, bylaws, and lists of members, baptisms, marriages, and deaths.

The Wiley Huntington Scott papers, 1817-1872, in the collection include correspondence and account books of his hotel and farm activities.

A diary of Arthur Lee Scott, 1845-1878, brother of E.H. Scott, while a student at Cooperstown Seminary, Cooperstown, New York, 1865-1866, is also included in the collection.

There are also family photographs and photographs of the localities in which E.H. Scott lived and of his travels.
