Biographical Note

Hoagy Carmichael was born in Bloomington, Indiana, November 22, 1899, the son of Howard Clyde and Lida Mary (Robinson) Carmichael. He earned a LLB from Indiana University in 1926, and married Ruth Mary Meinardi on March 14, 1936. He was the composer of many hit songs, namely Stardust (1927), and became the star of both his own radio program (Tonight at Hoagy's) and his own television show (Saturday Night Review). His acting credits include the films To Have and to Have Not, Johnny Angel, Canyon Passage, The Best Years of our Lives, Young Man with a Horn, and Night Song. His memoirs are titled The Stardust Road (New York, Rinehart and Company, Inc., [1946]).

Scope and Content Note

Included in the collection are letters concerning Carmichael's college band (1921-1923); an original draft of an undated telegram from Carmichael to Howard Allen on the occasion of a reunion of the class of 1926 of Indiana University; a 1936 telegram from director Howard Hawks offering a part in the movie To Have and Have Not; correspondence from director Michael Curtiz on the making of the motion picture Young Man with a Horn (1949); letters of thanks for public appearances; and invitations to various events and functions.

Other correspondence includes letters from Bix Beiderbecke, Evelyn Gramley, Robert A. Miller, and Ora Leonard Wildermuth concerning the gift of the Wildermuth collection of Hoagy Carmichael sheet music to Indiana University (1954). Among the correspondence is a letter from Carmichael to Mrs. Gramley, February 9, 1954, in which he assists in the compilation of his songs. From 1974 are letters from Herman B Wells and David A. Randall regarding the celebration of Carmichael's seventy-fifth birthday.

Additional correspondents include: Dwight David Eisenhower, Bob Hope, William Ezra Jenner, Patrick Anthony McCarran, Richard Milhous Nixon, and Don Redman.

There is a folder of printed material consisting of clippings from newspapers and periodicals relating to Carmichael, programs for performances in which he took part. Scores of Carmichael's musical compositions include I Love You in December, Isle of Capri, Ivy, Memphis in June, and Music Master.
