Abstract
The Thielman mss. II, ca. 1974-1993, consist of the correspondence of fine bindings collector James L. Thielman, primarily with book binders and usually commissioning a fine binding by each of them.

Biographical Note

James L. Thielman was a collector of fine bindings. He was esteemed among bibliophiles and bequeathed 80 bindings from his personal collection to the Lilly Library after his death in 1996.

Arrangement

The folders are arranged alphabetically by correspondent, one folder per name, unless otherwise indicated. Dates following the names represent the date range of letters in each folder.

Scope and Content Note

A few files, notably with Lucien Goldschmidt, Barnet Kottler, and Maggs Brothers, involve offers of fine bindings by book dealers.

Included in the binders' correspondence are James Brockman, Jeff Clements, Sün Evrard, Donald Glaister, Paula Gourley, Edward Gray, Elizabeth Greenhill, Arthur Johnson, Alain Lobstein, Denise Lubett, Bernard Middleton, Roger Powell, Silvia Rennie, Ivo Robinson, Philip Smith, Sally Lou Smith, and Michael Wilcox.
