Abstract
The Sullivan, Mark X. mss., ca.
1930-1952, consist of 16mm. reels of film featuring actress Miriam Hopkins
(1902-1972).

Biographical Note
Miriam Hopkins (1902-1972) was born in Savannah, GA and went to college at Goddard
Seminary (now Goddard College) in Plainfield, VT and Syracuse University in
Syracuse, NY. She began her career in show business as a chorus girl in New York
City and quickly established herself on Broadway. Her first Hollywood film role was
in
Fast and Loose (1930). Hopkins went on to star in
The Smiling Lieutenant (1931), with Maurice
Chevalier;
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931), with Fredric
March;
Dancers in the Dark (1932), with George Raft;
Two Kinds of Women (1932);
Trouble in Paradise (1932);
Design for
Living
(1933), with March again, as well as Gary Cooper, and directed by
Ernst Lubitsch;
The Story of Temple Drake (1933);
Becky Sharp (1935), for which she received an Academy
Award nomination for Best Actress; and
The Old Maid
(1939), with her rival Bette Davis. Hopkins turned to supporting roles in both
movies and television later in her career, including
The
Heiress
(1949), starring Olivia de Havilland and Montgomery Clift, and
directed by William Wyler; and
The Chase (1966),
starring Marlon Brando, Jane Fonda and Robert Redford, and directed by Arthur
Penn.
