Biographical Note

Young was born in Davenport, Iowa. He earned a BA from Carleton College, and an MA and PhD from Yale University. He currently teaches poetry as the Longman Professor of English at Oberlin College and is one of the co-editors of FIELD magazine. Young is the author of several collections of poetry and his honors include fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Ohio Arts Council. He has been the recipient of a Pushcart Prize as well as a Witter Bynner Translation Fellowship. He has also published numerous volumes of translation.

Scope and Content Note

The collection contains primarily correspondence and manuscripts concerning Young's translations of the Czech poet Miroslav Holub, including Holub's work Vanishing Lung Syndrome (1990). Young began as Holub's American translator in 1981 and continued until Holub's death in 1998.
