The Geduld mss., ca. 1922–1995, consist
of correspondence and papers of Indiana University Professor Emeritus of English and
Comparative Literature, Harry M. Geduld.

Biographical Note
Professor Geduld was born in London, England in 1931, attended the University of
Sheffield for his B.A. and M.A., and did his doctoral work at the University of
London, where he wrote his dissertation on George Bernard Shaw's play
Back to
Methuselah
. An edition of Bernard Shaw's
Back to Methuselah: (preface, play and
postscript): being introduction, notes and full textual apparatus with a survey of
the stage–history of the play, a study of the philosophical, dramatic and topic
aspects, and a consideration of the place of Back to Methuselah in relation to
Shaw's thought and dramatic work as a whole.
A 6 volume set. (See Lilly Library:
PR5368.G4 E23 1961) He came to Indiana University early in the 1960's as an
instructor in English and retired in 1996 as Chairperson of the Department of
Comparative Literature.

Scope and Content Note
Correspondence in the collection is primarily with film director Edward Dmytryk,
1908–1999, and dramatist, screenwriter Samson Raphaelson, 1896–1983. Other
correspondents include Lady Helen Violet Bonham–Carter and stage director, producer
Peter Coats.]
