Abstract
The Gerstein mss., ca. 1795-1824, consists mostly of portraits of General Lafayette collected by Jacob and Sylvia Finn Gerstein.

Biographical Note

Jacob Gerstein was a collector of engravings, lithograph, watercolor, etc. focusing on images of General Lafayette.

This collection is in single series.

Scope and Content Note

While the majority of the images of Lafayette are engravings, there is also a watercolor copied from an oil painting by Le Paon, a color lithograph, and a bronze bas-relief bust mounted on marble. Non-portrait items include: a watercolor of Lafayette's home, La Grange; two engravings of scenes from the French Revolution. Completing the collection are two manuscripts: a letter from James Monroe to congressman Charles Fenton Mercer, dated Dec. 24, 1824, and a signed testimonial from Lafayette concerning the loyalty of his secretary Poirey, dated Apr. 20, 1801
