Consists of writings, recordings, and videos of Professor Hawes, relating chiefly to humorist Kin Hubbard and his character creation, "Abe Martin."

Biographical Note

David S. Hawes became Professor Emeritus of Theatre and Drama at Indiana University in 1980.

Scope and Content Note

Materials relate chiefly to humorist Kin Hubbard and his character creation, "Abe Martin." Included also are his writings and proposals relating to two projects titled "Heritage of Humor in America" and "Laughter in America." Abe Martin has a prominent role in both of these projects, along with Artemus Ward (Charles Farrar Browne) and "Mr. Martin Dooley," created by Finley Peter Dunne.

The final items in the collection are a "partial memoir" called "Fragments of a Lucky Life--So Far (As Sifted from a Quirky Memory)," and two volumes of writings called " Scribbles" and "Poems from Scribbles." The latter is accompanied by a cassette tape of Prof. Hawes reading "Poems from Scribbles."
