James L. Thielman was a collector of fine bindings. He was esteemed among bibliophiles and bequeathed 80 bindings from his
personal collection to the Lilly Library after his death in 1996.
The catalogue was prepared by Martha R. Thielman and consists of a short typed entry
for the binder, author, title, printer and date of binding, as well as a color
photograph of the binding. Each item is numbered and the entire file is arranged in
chronological order by date of binding from 1978-1995. Also present, following the
catalogue, is an "Index of Binders"; "Cost (Book & Binding)," arranged in numerical
order of the catalogue; "Estimated Value – July 1994," also in numerical order; and
finally a list of all the books, each entry of which includes in addition to author,
title, etc., the date of publication and the cost of the volume, arranged in
alphabetical order by name of binder.
A list of the bindings is available. The books are cataloged in the Lilly Library. Consult IUCAT at call number: Z274 .A2
