Abstract
The Spears mss., 1955-1967, consist of
the files of educator Harold Spears, 1902-1980, relating to the twelve years he was
superintendent of schools for the San Francisco Unified School District.

Biographical Note
A native of Swayzee, Indiana, Dr. Spears began his teaching career in Evansville,
Indiana, and steadily moved up the administrative ladder of education, eventually
taking a position in San Francisco, California, as curriculum director for the
public schools in 1947. In 1955 he was appointed superintendent of public schools, a
post he held until retirement in June 1967. Dr. Spears then returned to Indiana and
continued to be active in teaching and as an educational consultant.
Arrangement
This collection is organized into reporter's transcripts, minutes of meetings, and scrapbooks.
Scope and Content Note
This collection contains "Reporter's transcripts" of all San Francisco Board of
Education meetings from June 1955 through June 1967. Also present are mimeographed
copies of the "minutes" for those meetings. Ten scrapbooks of clippings, April
1955-June 1967, primarily from San Francisco papers and mentioning Superintendent
Spears or dealing with local concerns in public school education, complete the
collection.
