The Walder, Dennis mss., ca. 1968-2014, consist of the papers of Dennis Walder, Emeritus Professor of Literature at The Open University in the United Kingdom, former director of The Ferguson Centre for African and Asian Studies, and founding director of the Department's Post-Colonial Literatures Research Group.

Biographical Note

Dennis Walder is a graduate of the University of Cape Town and the University of Edinburgh and was an Aytoun Research Fellow in English at the latter while completing his PhD. Walder is Emeritus Professor of Literature at The Open University in the United Kingdom, former director of The Ferguson Centre for African and Asian Studies, and was founding director of the Department's Post-Colonial Literatures Research Group.

Walder's research interests include 19th century fiction and 20th century literature. As a professor, Walder has taught and lectured on topics ranging from Shakespeare to the present day literature in the United Kingdom and abroad, and has also supervised PhD students. His professional life has focused on writing, editing, and researching many diverse topics but is preeminently known for his commentary on South Africa's best-known playwright Athol Fugard. Among Walder's publications is a book entitled Athol Fugard as well as a comprehensive study of the playwright. He has also edited three volumes of Fugard's plays and regularly writes program notes and lectures on performances of Fugard.

The collection is organized into the following series: I. Articles, II. Clippings, III. Correspondence, IV. Media, V. Miscellaneous, VI. Notes, VII. Programs, VIII. Publications, IX. Research, X. Writings, XI. James Lodge Papers, XII. Additions.

Scope and Content Note

Both the Articles and Clippings series focus on Walder, Athol Fugard, and Fugard's plays. The Correspondence series consists of Walder's correspondence. The Media series consists of cassettes, CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, photographs, and VHS tapes. The Miscellaneous series consist of unknown correspondence, writings, and clippings. The Notes series focuses on the major themes of Athol Fugard, Fugard's plays, and apartheid. The Programs series consists of program booklerts. The Publications series consists of newspapers and journals. The Research series has two subseries: Fugard and Walder. Both subseries focus on the subjects of Athol Fugard, Fugard's plays, and apartheid. The Writings series consists of bibliographies, dissertations, interviews, and scripts. The James Lodge papers series consist of items of Walder's stepfather, James Lodge, of Cape Town, South Africa, literary manuscripts, clippings, and scrapbooks. The Additions series consist of articles, clippings, correspondence, notes, progarms, publications, and writings.
