Biographical Note

Bernhard Heiden was born in Frankfurt, Germany on August 24, 1910. He began his formal music studies at the age of five learning by ear training and dictation with the Dalcroze method. This was soon followed by piano lessons, and by the age of six he was composing his first pieces. Although the piano was his main instrument, he also studied the violin and clarinet. From 1929-1933, he attended the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, and studied composition with Paul Hindemith. It was here that he met his wife Cola de Joncheere, a pianist and fellow student at the Hochschule. Cola was born in 1910 in DenHelder, Netherlands and studied piano with Edwin Fisher.

The Heidens immigrated to the United States in 1935 and settled in Detroit, where Cola taught piano and Bernhard taught at the Faculty Arts Center Music School. Heiden became a naturalized citizen in 1941, subsequently serving in the U.S. Army from 1943-1945 as the Assistant Bandmaster of the 445th Army Service Band, for which he wrote over 100 arrangements. Heiden received his M.A. Degree in Musicology from Cornell University under Donald J. Grout. In 1946, he joined the faculty of the IU School of Music where he taught mainly composition and served as the chair of the composition department. He also taught classes on counterpoint, score reading, and analytic techniques of the twentieth century. In 1933, Heiden was awarded the Mendelssohn Prize in Composition; he later received two awards from the Fromm Foundation, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. His works have been performed by the orchestras of Detroit, Chicago, Saint Louis, Pittsburgh, Rochester, Indianapolis and the New York Philharmonic and by many soloists and chamber ensembles.

Arrangement

The collection is organized into the following series: I. Bernhard Heiden; II. Cola Heiden.

The Bernhard Heiden series is further divided into subseries: Sketches and Scores; Music for Children (1946-1960); Miscellaneous Music Manuscripts; Press Clippings and Programs; and Correspondence; and Miscellaneous.

The Cola Heiden series is also divided into subseries: Music Manuscripts; and Programs, Clippings, and Correspondence.

Scope and Content Note

The Bernhard Heiden series is further divided into subseries: Sketches and Scores; Music for Children (1946-1960); Miscellaneous Music Manuscripts; Press Clippings and Programs; and Correspondence; and Miscellaneous. Pencil manuscripts may or may not be fair copy, but many are quite legible, so are simply called "pencil scores." Earlier ink manuscripts are folio style; later ink manuscripts are on "tissue" sheets. Bound scores are fair copy, probably copied and bound after they came back from the publisher. Correspondence includes letters from Paul Hindemith, Max and Quappi Beckmann, and George Rickey, among others.

The Cola Heiden series is also divided into subseries: Music Manuscripts; and Programs, Clippings, and Correspondence.
