Biographical Note
Ernest Taylor Pyle (1900-1945), also known as Ernie Pyle, was a Pulitzer Prize winning American journalist.
After attending Indiana University Bloomington, Pyle served as a newspaper correspondent and columnist who
covered the lives of ordinary people as well as soldiers in World War II. Pyle was killed in battle at
Ie Shima in the Pacific.
Scope and Content Note
The Pyle mss. IV, 1940, consist of carbon copies of dispatches by journalist Ernie Pyle, 1900-1945, sent to newspaper publisher
Scripps Howard. They
were written and sent almost daily from Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras during his Central American tour in January-March
1940. The first
was written aboard the S.S. Sixaola, bound for Panama from New Orleans; the last is from Miami, Florida after his return to
the States.
