Biographical Note

Norman Manea was born on July 19, 1936 in Bukovina, Romania. During World War II, Manea and his family were sent to a concentration camp in Transnistria. They all survived. He returned to his hometown, where he excelled in school. His first profession was engineering, and graduated from the Construction Institute in Bucharest specializing in hydrotechnique. Following several works of published fiction, he turned to writing full–time in 1974. To date, Manea has published approximately twenty novels, short stories, and essays, and has received several awards. Many of his works focus on Judaism, life in communist Romania, and the Holocaust. Forced into exile in 1986, Manea eventually emigrated to the United States. He lives in New York City.

Scope and Content Note

The collection is comprised mainly of drafts and translations of Manea's literary works. Also included are correspondence, transcripts of interviews, and audio-visual materials.
