BEARD, CHARLES AUSTIN: 1874-1948
Charles Austin Beard, distinguished American historian, son of William Henry and Mary Payne Beard, was born in Knightstown, Ind., on Nov. 27, 1874.
He was educated in the local schools and graduated from De Pauw University in 1898. He studied at Oxford and Cornell and received his A.M. from Columbia in 1903, and his Ph.D. in 1904. On Mar. 8, 1900, he married Mary Ritter of Indianapolis, who had been graduated from De Pauw one year before him. Mary Ritter Beard became not only the mother of his two children but also his fellow worker in the field of American social and political history and joint-author of several of his most significant works.
From 1910 to 1917Charles Austin Beard was a member of the Columbia University faculty. In 1917 he became director of the Training School for Public Service, New York, and continued there until 1922. In that year he became adviser to the Institute of Municipal Research at Tokyo, and after the earthquake of 1923 he became adviser to Count Geto, Japanese Minister of Home Affairs.
In later years the Beards resided at New Milford, Conn. He spent this period mainly in research and writing in his field. He died on Sept. 1, 1948.
Besides the titles listed, Dr. Beard edited and compiled many works on history and government and was the author and co-author of many textbooks.
