Scope and Content Note

This collection contains mostly correspondence from major figures in English literature between 1630-1800. It also includes literary works, including manuscripts and bound volumes; financial records; and legal documents.

Note on Indexing Term - "Art": Of particular interest are 1849 pen and ink sketch by William Makepeace Thackeray; extra- illustrations in an 1868 edition of Edward Fitzgerald's The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam; 1897 engraving of Rudyard Kipling; Of Gardens, an Essay designed, written and illuminated in 1905 by Alberto Sangorski and a 1922 autographed photograph of James Joyce taken by Man Ray.   • On a slip of paper pasted at the top of the letter is a note in red ink that Chappell was Milton’s tutor.

  • Witnessed by Alexander Pope and Thomas Hill. Published in Gentleman’s Magazine, March, 1822, pages 207-208.
  • Appended is the grant of probate bearing a blue seal and written in Latin to Anne Rowe on June 19, 1719, by the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, and as entered in the several offices including those of Thomas Foley and Edward Harley, July 6-Nov. 9, 1719, 18 x 17 cm.

  • [First part]: The Appian Way, Metius Curtius, The Druid Judgement, Marcus Manlius Capitolinus.
  • [Second part: elegies, odes, sonnets], some of which honor the River Usk and other rivers, Member of Parliament from Gloucester Sir Charles Barrow, bart., -1789, the godmother of Button Gwinnett, Barbara Button, 1695?-1775, physician John Caple [i.e., Capel] of Gloucester, -1753, alderman George Heathcote, -1768; and "Sepulchral Inscriptions" concerning the tombstone of Gwinnett’s father and mother, Samuel and Anne (Emes) Gwinnett, and another Inscription to Gulielmo [ i.e. William] Warburton, dated "friday October 20, 1778".
  • Occasional commentary notes the dates of composition of the pieces and other references, that three pieces are college exercises (Gwinnett attended Oriel College, Oxford), and that in 1761 Button Gwinnett, 1735-1777, Signer of the Declaration of Independence, returned from Canada (page 220)
  • Front marbled flyleaf , recto and verso, bears the initials of Emilia Gwinnett, 1741-1807, who inherited the manuscript from her brother and whose collection was sold in 1816 (British Museum 94:991)

  • The letter was addressed to Peter Miller which appears to be an error. There is also some doubt as to whether the address is in the hand of Burns. A farm was leased by Burns from Patrick Miller, banker.
