description:

This image appears on page 25 of the March 1970 issue of the Indiana Alumni Magazine. The caption reads, in full: "Following directions - Observing street signs pays off for Gary Atwood, junior from New Castle, who, like the sign says turns around for a passing glance at Angela DeAngelis, senior from Paterson, N.J." Gary Atwood (BA 1976, Political Science) and Angela DeAngelis were married in Indiana University's Beck Chapel on May 8, 1971 (see image P0043067). In June of 1973 Angela left Gary and in December of that same year she became a member of the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA). Her SLA name was General Gelina and it was usually her voice that was heard on tape-recorded press releases for the SLA. Angela, along with five other members of the SLA, was killed on May 17, 1974 during a gun battle, with Los Angeles police, and fire that consumed the house (1466 East 54th Street) which the SLA was using. Two other Indiana University graduates, Bill and Emily Harris also became members of the SLA. The SLA's most-famous criminal act was the kidnapping of Patty Hearst. According to Director / Cinematographer John McGinnis, former IU student and friend of Angela Atwood: "I only met Gary, once. They both had just moved to San Francisco. I was editing commercials for Diane Feinstein when she first ran for Mayor of the city. They found me in an editorial suite and we talked about their recent trip West. When they arrived all their wedding presents were in their car. Then they made a bad mistake. They parked on the street and left all their presents in a locked car. The next morning they found the car windows broken and every present stolen. Nothing was left. Angel was distraught and I offered them my home to stay in while they could put their lives back in order. They declined and soon left...I did not know the Harrises. Emily was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. My late wife was also a Chi Omega at I.U., but from an earlier era...Frankly, I was surprised the FBI never contacted me about my Angel relationship...Angel acted as a Production Assistant (PA) on a film I was shooting for the Indiana Chief of Public Instruction. The film was a 'wake-up call' for grade, middle, high and college level students. Basically, an anti-drug production.' "
