Administrative History
Pi Lambda Theta was founded in 1910 through at the University of Missouri at Columbia as
an honor and professional association for women in education. Between 1912 and 1916 six
other schools established local chapters spurring the organization of a national
association in 1917. Indiana University Bloomington’s Iota chapter of Pi Lambda Theta
was chartered in 1920, just three years later. Although begun as a women's organization,
Pi Lambda Theta began admitting men in 1974.
As an honor and professional society, the organization’s aim is to foster a professional
spirit and the highest standard of scholarship among educators and students in the field
of education. To that aim, the Pi Lambda Theta Educational Trust was founded in 1981
(now the Educational Endowment).
Today, the offices of the now international association are located in Bloomington,
Indiana, and there are more than 100 chapters throughout the United States and the
Philippines representing over 16,000 members.
Arrangement
Organized into three series: Administrative files, Publications, and Scrapbooks.
Scope and Content Note
The records of the Pi Lambda Theta educational honor and professional society cover the
years 1920 to 1995 and have been organized into three series: Administrative files,
Publications, and Scrapbooks. A scrapbook spanning the years 1925 to 1946 is of
particular interest as it includes many annotated black and white photographs dating
from the period. Although the collection spans the years 1920 to 1995, there are few
materials dating from 1952 to 1984.
Series one, Administrative files dates from 1920 to 1984 and is arranged alphabetically.
The bulk of this series consists of membership lists with a copy of the constitution,
meeting minutes and a treasurer’s ledger book.
The Publications series spans the years 1931 to 1995. Indiana Iota Items was published
yearly by the Iota chapter and one issue (1931) is included in the collection. The Pi
Lambda Theta Newsletter is published quarterly by the national office in Bloomington,
Indiana. The series is arranged chronologically.
The final series, Scrapbooks, spans the years 1925 to 1990 and is arranged
chronologically. The scrapbook dating from 1925 to 1946 has been left intact so
photographs from those years remain in the collection. The other two scrapbooks
(1986-1988 and 1989-1990) were photocopied to preserve their original order and layout.
The photographs have been transferred to the Archives Photographs Collection.
