Historical Note
The Century Literary Club was founded on 22 November 1890 at Indiana University in
Century Hall in the Old College Building. The object of the “Century,” as it was
nicknamed, was to promote literary and social culture for non-fraternity, male students
of the university. Holding the motto “Each for the Society, and the Society for all,”
the Century met every Saturday evening in Century Hall to host literary readings,
musical exercises, and lively debates of contemporary social and academic issues. The
Century was also known to host the occasional social, inviting coeds to join in the
festivities. The exact date the Century disbanded is unknown.
Scope and Content Note
The Century Literary Club records are divided into three series: Governing files,
Minutes, and Financial records. The Governing files includes the Century’s constitution,
the by-laws, and the membership roster. Minutes span the period from 1893 until 1900,
and the financial records that compose the third series record expenditures and receipts
from 1895 until 1899. The archives does not possess the records from the Century
Literary Club's first years as an organization at Indiana University.

This Collection is organized into three series: Governing files, Minutes, and Financial
records.
