Administrative History
Phi Alpha Theta was founded in 1921 with the first chapter established at the University
of Arkansas. It was founded as an honorary history fraternity which was co-ed and
non-discriminating by race or religion according to the 1949 constitution. Beginning in
1938, Phi Alpha Theta began publication of their journal
The
Historian
, which is still in publication. Today, Phi Alpha Theta touts 820
active chapters with 275,000 members.
Phi Alpha Theta is governed by a national council composed of seven members elected by
chapter delegates at the biennial national convention. Usually the biennial meeting is
held in conjunction with the American Historical Association meeting.
The Indiana University chapter of Phi Alpha Theta was organized and approved by the
national council during the spring semester of 1951 as the Delta Epsilon chapter. It was
the 101st chapter of Phi Alpha Theta. Chapters generally have six officers, a President,
a Vice-President, a Historian, a Secretary/Treasurer, a Program Chairman, and a faculty
advisor. The President, Vice-president and Historian make up the executive council for
each chapter. Throughout the academic year each chapter hosts their own events with many
offering prizes for historical work.
Arrangement
Organized into four series: Administrative files; Events; Publications; and Personal
record cards.
Scope and Content Note
This collection is comprised of four series, Administrative files, Events, Publications,
and Personal record cards. All of the series have been arranged in alphabetical order,
except the final series which has been arranged in chronological order.
The Administrative files consist of material related to the organization and
administrative functions of the Delta Epsilon chapter of Phi Alpha Theta at Indiana
University. Items such as the by-laws, constitution, membership rosters, and records
relating to the installation of the chapter can be located in this series. All files in
this series are arranged in alphabetical order and span 1950-1963.
The Events series consists of material concerning specific events held by the Delta
Epsilon chapter at Indiana University from 1951-1961 such as member meetings, annual
initiations, and the biennial national meeting. All files in this series are in
alphabetical order.
The Publications series includes items produced, distributed, or collected by Phi Alpha
Theta or by the Delta Epsilon chapter from 1949-1959. Included in the collection are
National Council Bulletins produced by the national office, a history of the
organization, newspaper clippings, and a chapter officer’s handbook. All files are
arranged in alphabetical order according to publication title.
The final series, Personal record cards, contains information on students enrolled as
members of the PAT Delta Epsilon chapter from 1951-1962. Information included on the
cards details where individuals did their undergraduate work and, where appropriate,
where they did their graduate work as well. No confidential information is listed on the
cards, and therefore they are open for research. All of the cards have been organized by
academic school year within the series.
