Biographical Note
A professor at Indiana University from 1986 to 2008, Professor Bauman is an eclectic
scholar, whose scholarly contributions have transcended conventional academic
boundaries. Bauman has degrees in English (B.A., Michigan, 1961), Folklore (M.A.,
Indiana, 1962), Anthropology (M.S., Anthropology, University of Pennsylvania), and
American Civilization (Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania, 1968). Best known for his
theoretical and methodological contributions to the ethnographic study of language
and performance, Bauman's scholarship, has had an impact on the development of a
number of intersecting fields of study, including, folklore, anthropology, history,
linguistics, semiotics, and speech communication. His diverse background has
afforded to him the opportunity to befriend and collaborate with several of
folklore’s most illustrious scholars, including Henry Glassie, Dan Ben-Amos, Charles
Briggs and the late Americo Paredes. His writings have been widely reprinted and
translated, and he has lectured at scholarly institutions in South America, Europe,
Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
In the course of his academic career, Bauman has headed two of folklore's major
programs, first as Director of the Center for Intercultural Studies in Folklore and
Ethnomusicology at the University of Texas, and later as Chair of the Department of
Folklore and Ethnomusicology at Indiana University. Especially active in graduate
education, he has directed close to 60 Ph.D. dissertations in a number of
disciplines, and he has won the Distinguished Teaching and Mentoring Award of the
University Graduate School.
Bauman's professional leadership has been cross-disciplinary. He has served as
president of the Semiotic Society of America, the Society for Linguistic
Anthropology, and the Society of Fellows of the American Folklore Society. Among
many other professional activities, he has been chair of the Folklife Advisory
Council of the Smithsonian Institution, editor of the Journal of American Folklore,
and a member of more than 15 editorial boards. He has also been a Guggenheim Fellow,
a Fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, Folklore
Fellow of the Finnish Academy of Sciences, and twice holder of National Endowment
for the Humanities Fellowships.
Arrangement
The collection is organized into six series: Awards/Commendations, Publications,
Research projects, Correspondence, Teaching, and Conferences/Lecture Series.
Scope and Content Note
The Richard Bauman papers are organized into six series. The first series,
Awards/Commendations (1987–2005, undated) is arranged alphabetically and includes
his awards for Distinguished Teaching and Mentoring and Distinguished Professorship.
Also, at the beginning of this series, is a copy of Bauman’s Curriculum Vitae.
Publications (1958–2002, undated), the second series, is arranged alphabetically and
contains files with materials for different writings that Bauman has either
collaborated on, contributed to or wrote independently. The collection, however, is
currently missing any files for
"Towards New Perspectives
in Folklore"
, which Bauman edited along with Americo Paredes.
The third series, Research Projects (1969-1998, undated), begins with materials for
Bauman’s
"Mexican Folk Drama Project"
. The rest of
the series continues on alphabetically by general topic of research, beginning with
"Dog Trading". Subseries for these series
includes fieldwork, general research and funding.
Correspondence (1968-1996, undated), the fourth series, is arranged alphabetically by
last name. Some of the more prominent correspondences are those between Bauman and
Dolby, Ben-Amos, Glassie, Hymes, Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, Kratz and Herzfeld. Be
aware, some names might appear misfiled as people have gotten married.
The fifth series, Teaching (1972–2008, undated) begins with Bauman’s materials from
Indiana University; these include files on his sabbatical, retirement, syllabi, PhD
committees and Faculty Annual Reports from 1988 to 2007. Next comes those materials
compiled while Bauman was at the University of Texas. The series ends with a
subseries of Student Recommendations, which is organized alphabetically by the
student’s surname. This subseries is closed to researchers at this time.
Conferences/ Lecture Series (1979-2006, undated) is the final series and it is
arranged alphabetically by the title or topic of the particular conference. Some
subseries include any general research of financing Bauman did for the
conference.
Restricted materials are all located in Boxes 11 and 12. Where entire folders were
restricted, these are indicated in the finding aid. The bulk of restricted
materials, however, consists of letters of recommendation found in various folders.
Just these items were pulled and the remaining materials are listed as usual in the
folder list.
