Administrative History
Phi Beta Kappa was first organized in 1776 at the College of William and Mary in
Williamsburg, Virginia. It is the oldest Greek letter organization in the United
States. Phi Beta Kappa primarily elects the top students of each graduating class to
become members of the society. The goal of the society is to promote scholarship and
friendship among students and those who have graduated from colleges in the United
States. The idea to establish a chapter at Indiana University was first introduced
in the fall of 1907. A charter was granted on September 14, 1910 at the Council in
New York, and the Gamma Chapter was officially established in 1911.
Arrangement
Collection is organized into three series: Minutes, Booklets and pamphlets, and
Administrative files.
Scope and Content Note
This collection is organized into three series. The first series, Minutes, is in its
own box and consists of one book containing the full run of minutes from 1911 to
1951. Also included are addendums to the minutes in an envelope. The second series,
Booklets and pamphlets, contains early handbooks and the 1911 chapter constitution,
as well as many of the programs and tickets from the organization’s annual
initiation dinners dating from 1911 to 1985. The third series, Administrative files,
consists of memos, proposals, reports, and election lists, the bulk of which are
from the 1950s and 1960s.
