Administrative History

Folklore and Ethnomusicology Publications was created in 1988 as the umbrella organization for three Indiana University Folklore Institute student publications groups. Originally named Folklore Publications, Inc., it changed in 2001 to Folklore and Ethnomusicology Publications, Inc, in order to include Ethnomusicology Publications Group. The incorporation now encompasses Folklore Forum Society, Folklore Publications Group, Trickster Press, and Ethnomusicology Publications Group.

Folklore Forum was the first journal created in 1968 by students expressly for the timely publication of student papers, critiques, and reviews. The group extended the journal’s publication to include the Bibliographic and Special Series in 1968, which produced 16 publications and ceased publishing in 1977. Folklore Forum changed its name in 1972 to become the Folklore Forum Society, and in 1978 changed to the Folklore Forum, Inc. In 2004, the journal began publishing exclusively online.

Folklore Publications Group was initially created as an extension of the Folklore Student Association in 1973 but became independent of the group the following year. From 1973 to 1979, the group produced the Preprint Series, Reprint Series, Festshrift, and Monograph Series in order to quickly print student articles awaiting publication in other journals. In 1980, Trickster Press began publishing independently of the Folklore Publications Group as a replacement for the Folklore Publications Group’s Monograph Series. It now serves the role as not-for-profit publishing house within the Folklore and Ethnomusicology Publications, Inc., hierarchy and reissues out of print texts.

Arrangement

The collection is organized into five series: Folklore Forum Society; Folklore Publications Group; Trickster Press; Ethnomusicology; and Publications.

Scope and Content Note

The Folklore and Ethnomusicology Publications records, 1942-2004, are organized into five series: Folklore Forum Society, Folklore Publications Group, Trickster Press, Ethnomusicology, and Publications.

The first series, Folklore Forum Society, spans the period from 1968 to 2004, and is further organized into the five sub-series: Administrative files; Correspondence files; Accepted articles; Rejected articles; Book reviews. The Administrative files sub-series is arranged chronologically and contains Folklore Forum group meeting minutes, general publication data, information on and photos of contributors, and lists of editorial staff. The Correspondence files are all arranged chronologically by date. Correspondents include B. W. Andrsejewski, University of London; Howard G. Baetzhold, Butler University; Dan Ben-Amos, University of Pennsylvania; Jan Harold Brunvand, University of Utah; Alan Dundes, Berkeley; and Richard A. Reuss, Folklore Archives, Wayne State University. The majority of the Accepted articles sub-series are identified by the journal volume and number in which they were printed and are arranged chronologically by volume and number; the remaining are simply identified as accepted articles and are arranged alphabetically by author. Authors include Simon J. Bronner, Jan Harold Brunvand, Elli Kongas-Maranda, Joanna Pecore, and Takayuki Waketake. The Rejected articles sub-series contains articles that were not accepted as well as some articles lacking definite approval or rejection; the sub-series includes articles by Linda Adams, Dr. Hermann Bausinger, and Danny Rochman and covers topics from African and Japanese to local Indiana folk culture . The Rejected article sub-series is arranged alphabetically by author surname. Many folders also contain correspondence relevant to the publication or article. The Book reviews subseries is arranged chronologically by date. It contains draft copies of reviews of books on folklore. Reviewers include Mary Dart, Bill Ellis, Annette B. Fromm, Laura Arntson Harris, and John B. Wolford.

Folklore Publications Group, 1968-2000, is organized into seven sub-series: Administrative, Folklore and Theory, Folklore Preprint Series, Folklore Monograph Series, Folklore Reprint Series, and Festschrifts. The Administrative files contain accept/reject correspondence, publication information, and advertising files and are arranged chronologically by date. Folklore and Theory contains articles accepted for publication arranged alphabetically and one file containing information about the contributing authors. The Preprint, Monograph, and Reprint Series files contain the articles accepted for publication and corresponding editorial comments and correspondence, and they are arranged chronologically by journal volume and number or alphabetically if no volume and number can be found. The Festschrifts sub-series is arranged into the files on the festschrift for Linda Degh and those for the festschrift for Warren Roberts. The Linda Degh Festschrift files are further arranged sequentially by chapter. The Warren Roberts Festschrift files are further arranged alphabetically, first by topics which contain organizational files on correspondence and book covers, and then by the last name of the author of each article.

Trickster Press, 1972-2000, is further organized into four sub-series: General, Log Buildings of Southern Indiana, Emergence of Culture, and Toward New Perspectives. The Correspondence files contain general correspondence and one file on correspondence for the publication Cross Rhythms. The files are arranged chronologically by date. Log Buildings of Southern Indiana contains correspondence for the publication, an editor’s manual, and the publication manuscript. All files are arranged chronologically by date. The published versions of Log Buildings of Southern Indiana are available in the Publications series of this collection. Emergence of Culture contains master copies/proofs for the book arranged alphabetically by file name, and articles arranged by chapter number. The published versions of Emergence of Culture are also available in the Publications series of this collection. Toward New Perspectives contains proofs and front and back matter arranged chronologically by date, and articles arranged alphabetically by the author’s last name. The original publication on which the updated publication is modeled is also included at the end of the series. The updated published versions are available in the Publications series of this collection.

Ethnomusicology, 1942-1999, is organized into two sub-series: Ethnomusicology Publication Group and Folklorist Travel Journals. Ethnomusicology Publication Group files are arranged chronologically by date. They contain mostly correspondence on publishing, specifically on the publication Discourse, a book containing articles by various scholars on ethnomusicology issues. The files include folders containing correspondence, reviews, and general publication information for the first and third volumes of Discourse. Folklorist Travel Journals’ files are arranged chronologically by date and contain photocopies of Folklore Institute professor Stith Thompson’s and his wife’s world travel diaries.

Publications, 1968-2004, contains six sub-series: Articles, Folklore Forum, Bibliographic and Special Series, The Monograph Series, The Preprint Series and Trickster Press. Articles contains copies and originals of published articles, arranged alphabetically by the authors’ last name, concerning both folklore and ethnomusicology topics. It cannot be determined whether or not they were published by any of the Folklore Publications Group journals. Folklore Forum series contains nearly all publications arranged chronologically by volume and number. Bibliographic and Special Series contains publications arranged chronologically by publication number. The Monograph Series contains a small sampling of publications, and The Preprint Series contains nearly all publications; both sub-series are arranged chronologically by volume. Trickster Press also contains all publications, books rather than journals, arranged by date of publication.

Note: Box 12 contains the floppy, zip, and compact disks that accompanied some folders. The contents of the disks include articles and papers sent to the Folklore Publications Group.

Separated Material

Seven Folklore Institute files were pulled to be added to Folklore Institute collection. Two folders on Journal of Folklore Institute/Journal of Folklore Research were among the collection’s holdings when turned over to the archives. They were added to the Journal of Folklore Research collection. Records of both the Ethnomusicology Student Association and the Folklore Student Association were pulled for separate processing.
