Abstract
Originally published as the
Journal of the Folklore Institute in 1964 by the
Folklore Institute, the
Journal of Folklore Research was established in 1982 to
incorporate more international and expansive coverage. The goal of the journal is to
link similar social sciences such as anthropology, communication, history,
linguistics, literature, oral history, psychology and sociology. The collection
consists of administrative files, including various advertisements, correspondence,
editorial board meeting papers, as well as accepted and rejected articles which were
retained to document the selection and edit processes. There are also miscellaneous
copies of JFR and some other printed materials.
Access Restrictions
Collection is open for research. Advance notice required.
Electronic materials require additional processing before they can be accessed. Please contact the Archives staff for further
information.
Administrative History
The publication of the
Journal of Folklore Research
developed out of Indiana University's folklore curriculum. The study of folklore at
the University began as early as 1920s. From 1940-1960s, IU hosted summer folklore
institutes, organized primarily by Professor Stith Thompson. Due to the efforts of
Professor Thompson and Professor Richard Dorson, the Folklore Institute became an
academic department in the College of Arts and Sciences in 1962. Today the institute
is known as the Department of Folklore & Ethnomusicology, which is made up of
both the Folklore and the Ethnomusicology Institutes.
The Folklore Institute began publishing the
Journal of the
Folklore Institute
in 1964 under the direction of Richard M. Dorson. In
1982 the name was changed to the
Journal of Folklore
Research
to incorporate the more international and expansive coverage.
Indiana University Press assumed responsibility for publishing and distributing the
journal beginning in July 2002. Issues are published three times a year and are
designed to provide an international forum for current theory and research among
scholars of folklore and related fields. In addition to articles, authors contribute
timely reports on new books, assess the current state of folklore research, and
address the fieldwork experience.
Arrangement
Collection is organized into three series: Administrative files, Articles, and
Publications.
Scope and Content Note
The Journal of Folklore Research records spans 6.2 cubic feet and are organized into
three series Administrative files, Articles, and Publications.
The Administrative files are comprised primarily of advertisements, correspondence,
editorial board meeting papers, and various files on special subjects. The series
spans the period from 1972-2002.
Articles are arranged chronologically and then alphabetically by author's last name.
A vast percentage of the files within the original collection were article
submissions, and Archives staff sampled these, retaining approximately 1.5 cubic
feet to illustrate the Journal's editorial process. As such, the retained articles
consist of both accepted and rejected submissions from the years 1983-2006.
The Publications series consists of three publications -
Indiana Folklore,
Journal of Folklore
Institute,
and
Journal of Folklore
Research
- arranged chronologically by issue. The series spans the years
1934-1997.
