Abstract
William Earl Brown was a native of
Bloomington, Indiana, where he completed his primary and secondary education. He
continued his education at IU and earned a Bachelor's degree in History. This
collection consists of his school books and class work from the 4th grade to the
12th grade, as well as records of the courses he took as a student at IU and papers
he wrote for various classes.

Biographical Note
William Earl Brown was born on March 31, 1886, in Bloomington, Indiana. He completed
his primary and secondary education and went on to become a student at Indiana
University from 1904 to 1908. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in History.
During his junior and senior years he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon
fraternity and of the History Club, and held the position of treasurer on the
Arbutus yearbook board. After he graduated he moved to St. Louis where he lived
until his death on April 5, 1982.

chronologically by year.
Scope and Content Note
The Earl Brown papers are arranged chronologically by year and consist of primary,
secondary and university coursework materials. His primary and secondary school
books and workbooks cover the subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, and
History. Files from his tenure at Indiana University (1904-1908) include records for
courses taken, including for Botany and Latin classes, and papers he wrote for
History classes. Also included is a personal diary which Brown kept for a short time
in 1902, in which he describes going hunting for rabbits and fishing and doing
chores, such as stacking wood.
