Biographical Note/Administrative History

Delta Sigma Pi was formed by four business students at the School of Commerce, Finance, and Accounts of New York University in the autumn of 1906. Alexander F. Makay, Alfred Moysello, H. Albert Tienken, and Harold V. Jacobs often gathered to discuss class topics and school affairs. In response to the feeling that the larger student body were ignored by a current dominant organization, they formed a club open to all business students that would later become Delta Sigma Pi. The years between 1908 and the 1920s saw many formal changes and great expansion for the fraternity. In 1908 the name Delta Sigma Pi was formally adopted and the by-laws were passed. 1912 saw the introduction of Deltasig, an internal publication and the creation of the Delta Sigma Pi Scholarship Key, first given to recognize an outstanding male business senior of the business school. Many of the keys were handed out nation-wide to members, however more presently these awards are handed out to the most outstanding male or female business senior in the School of Business with an active local chapter.

The National chapter was officially founded in 1914, with a statement of Fraternity Purpose being added to its constitution preamble in 1915. In 1957 the Central Headquarters moved from Chicago to the newly constructed, permanent headquarters in Oxford, Ohio. Since then the Fraternity has evolved and grown steadily. Most notably, in the 1970s Delta Sigma Pi became the first professional business fraternity to go co-ed, approving and allowing the immediate entrance of female business students as of November 7, 1975.

As a social and professional fraternity Delta Sigma Pi always was, and continues to be dedicated to fostering diversity in and dedication to Business education, service, and leadership. The Alpha Pi chapter was established at Indiana University Bloomington chapter in 1925.

Arrangement

Collection is organized into two series: Administrative files and Photographs.

Scope and Content Note

The records of the Alpha Pi Chapter or Delta Sigma Pi are organized into two series, Administrative files and Photographs, and only document a slice of DSP’s time on campus. The Administrative files series is further organized into two subseries: General files and Minutes. The General files are arranged alphabetically and span 1979-1982. Included in the series are photocopies of historical documents relating to the establishment of the Bloomington Chapter, including founder information, the constitution and By-Laws, as well as later records such as membership information. The Minutes subseries consists of meeting minutes spanning 1951-1982, arranged chronologically. The second series, Photographs, consists of five photo albums/scrapbooks from the 1980s.
