Abstract
W. Edson Richmond was a professor in both English and Folklore, and Acting Director of the Folklore Institute (1981-1982) at Indiana University, Bloomington, from 1945 until 1986. This collection documents Richmond’s research and publishing in the area of Norwegian and Scandinavian language and culture as well as other academic activities, such as instruction and academic advising, service on departmental and professional committees, and participation in folklore conferences and professional societies. Types of material present in the collection include published and unpublished articles, research and instruction notes, correspondence, and programs and brochures.

Biographical Note

W. Edson Richmond (1916-1994) was a professor at Indiana University Bloomington from 1945-1986. He served as acting chair of IU’s Folklore Institute, as editor of the Journal of Folklore Research, and was involved in a multitude of organizations such as the Modern Language Association, the Hoosier Folklore Society, and the Fellows of the American Folklore Society. Additionally, Richmond served as the chair for Indiana University’s Fulbright Committee. As his papers will show, the scope of W. Edson Richmond’s research pertains to Norwegian language and culture.

Scope and Content Note

The W. Edson Richmond papers span the years 1855-1990 and mainly document Richmond’s career as a folklorist and professor of the IU Folklore Institute at Indiana University Bloomington (1945-1986). Professional activities represented in the collection include Richmond’s research and publishing on Scandinavian (especially Norwegian) language and culture, instruction and academic advising, service on departmental and professional committees, and participation in folklore conferences and professional societies. Additionally, the collection includes material on Richmond’s personal education background and family history. Types of material present in the collection include published and unpublished articles, research and instruction notes, correspondence, and programs and brochures.
