Hoagland "Hoagy" Carmichael (1899-1981) was an American jazz composer, pianist, singer,
actor, and bandleader. Carmichael grew up in Bloomington, Indiana, and graduated from
the Indiana University (IU) School of Law. He composed hundreds of songs over the course
of his career, but is best known for composing the music for "Stardust", "Georgia on My
Mind", "The Nearness of You", and "Heart and Soul", four of the most-recorded American
songs of all time.
The Hoagy Carmichael Collection represents the largest holding of materials pertaining
to Hoagy Carmichael available anywhere in the world.
The Hoagy Carmichael Collection at the Archives of Traditional Music includes music
manuscripts, lyric sheets, sound recordings, films and videos, photographs,
correspondence, scrapbooks, typescripts, and other memorabilia, totaling more than 3,500
items. The Hoagy Carmichael Collection consists of materials that were in his personal
collection, items donated by his family, and items pertaining to Carmichael donated by
others-- researchers, musicians and collectors-- from the 1970s to the present.
Some duplicates of donated material removed from collection.
Additional publications and research material may be accessed in
IUScholarWorks.
