Biographical Note

William Banfield is a composer, professor, and scholar of Black music. He is currently the Director of Africana Studies at Berklee College of Music. Banfield received his B.M. from the New England Conservatory, his M.T.S. from Boston University, and a D.M.A. in composition from the University of Michigan. He was the director of the IU Soul Revue from 1992 to 1997, as well as a professor in African American Studies and Music at Indiana University. While a student at the University of Michigan, he established the Extensions of the Tradition concert series to highlight works by Black composers; he brought that concert series to Indiana University in 1993. Banfield also established the Collection of Original Scores and Manuscripts of Black Composers.

  • Administrative Information

    Acquisition Information
The manuscript scores and promotional materials in this collection were donated between 1994 and 2007 as part of the establishment of the Undine Smith Moore Collection of Original Scores and Manuscripts of Black Composers by William Banfield, Composer-in-Residence at the Afro-American Arts Institute and Assistant Professor of Afro-American Studies at Indiana University. Media and interviews pertaining to Landscapes in Color were donated between 1997 and 2000.

When Emory University acquired the bulk of Moore’s personal papers and compositions in 2010, the AAAMC re-established the Undine Smith Moore Collection as works specifically by Moore. Material by and pertaining to other composers was then separated into individual collections. Landscapes in Color (originally SC 110) was combined with Banfield's manuscripts and promotional material to form the present collection.

    Usage Restrictions
All requests for copying and publishing materials must be submitted in writing to the Archives of African American Music and Culture. Some publication requests may also require the written permission of the interviewer, interviewees, and/or performers.
    Preferred Citation
