Biographical Note

John W. Sloan was born in 1915 in Oak Park, Illinois. He graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry from Indiana University in 1939. From 1941-1945 he served in the United States Army, ultimately reaching the rank of Captain. During this time he was a member of the following units: 155th Station Hospital; Medical Sec. CASC 1928, Headquarters 303rd Air Service Group, and the 20th Air Force. Later he served in the Army Reserve, where he reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Following the end of the war in 1945, he married Nadine Miller, and the couple would go on to have four children. Seeking a graduate degree in Chemistry, he returned to Indiana University in 1946, but completed only two semesters of coursework. Around this time he received a position with the United States Department of Agriculture. After 31 years of employment with the USDA as a laboratory chemist and supervisor, he retired in 1976.

Arrangement

This small collection is organized into two series: Coursework and Photographs.

Scope and Content Note

This small collection is arranged into two series: Coursework and Photographs. The Coursework series spans the years 1935-1947 and includes two laboratory notebooks, a smaller packet of laboratory notes, and a class assignment created when Sloan was an undergraduate and graduate student at IU.

The second series, Photographs, contains five black and white photographs dated 1938-1939. These depict locations on the Indiana University Campus, including Dunn Meadow, the Kirkwood Observatory, Maxwell Hall, and Myers Hall. These are housed with the Archives Photograph Collection; consult the Archives Photographs Curator for access.

Separated Material

Five photographs of the Indiana University campus have been removed and transferred to the University Archives Photographs Collection. One undated photograph, which was removed from a physics laboratory notebook dated 1938, depicts a laboratory. Another, dated August 13, 1938 is of Myers Hall. The Dunn Meadow stream is the subject of another photograph dated January 13, 1939. A photo dated August 27, 1939 depicts the Kirkwood observatory. Finally, there is a photograph of Maxwell Hall dated September 10, 1939.
