Abstract
Indiana University alumnus John W. Sloan
was born in 1915 in Oak Park, Illinois. He graduated with a B.S. in chemistry from
IU in 1939, and completed two semesters of graduate study in chemistry from
1946-1947. He served in the United States Army from 1941-1945, where he reached the
rank of Captain, later becoming a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve. This small
collection includes chemistry and physics laboratory notebooks and coursework from
Sloan’s time as an undergraduate and graduate student. The collection also contains
five photographs Sloan took of the IU campus when he was an undergraduate.

Biographical Note
John W. Sloan was born in 1915 in Oak Park, Illinois. He graduated with a B.S. in
Chemistry from Indiana University in 1939. From 1941-1945 he served in the United
States Army, ultimately reaching the rank of Captain. During this time he was a
member of the following units: 155th Station Hospital; Medical Sec. CASC 1928,
Headquarters 303rd Air Service Group, and the 20th Air Force. Later he served in the
Army Reserve, where he reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Following the end of
the war in 1945, he married Nadine Miller, and the couple would go on to have four
children. Seeking a graduate degree in Chemistry, he returned to Indiana University
in 1946, but completed only two semesters of coursework. Around this time he
received a position with the United States Department of Agriculture. After 31 years
of employment with the USDA as a laboratory chemist and supervisor, he retired in
1976.

This small collection is organized into two series: Coursework and Photographs.
Scope and Content Note
This small collection is arranged into two series: Coursework and Photographs. The
Coursework series spans the years 1935-1947 and includes two laboratory notebooks, a
smaller packet of laboratory notes, and a class assignment created when Sloan was an
undergraduate and graduate student at IU.
The second series, Photographs, contains five black and white photographs dated
1938-1939. These depict locations on the Indiana University Campus, including Dunn
Meadow, the Kirkwood Observatory, Maxwell Hall, and Myers Hall. These are housed
with the Archives Photograph Collection; consult the Archives Photographs Curator
for access.

Separated Material
Five photographs of the Indiana University campus have been removed and transferred
to the University Archives Photographs Collection. One undated photograph, which was
removed from a physics laboratory notebook dated 1938, depicts a laboratory.
Another, dated August 13, 1938 is of Myers Hall. The Dunn Meadow stream is the
subject of another photograph dated January 13, 1939. A photo dated August 27, 1939
depicts the Kirkwood observatory. Finally, there is a photograph of Maxwell Hall
dated September 10, 1939.
