Abstract
Health service for Indiana University students originated around the turn of the twentieth century as part of the university’s efforts to contain infectious diseases. The first formal Health Center was constructed in 1939 and was replaced by a larger facility in 1965, which has seen a number of renovations since. This collection consists of correspondence, memos, proposals, reports, organizational charts, policy information, news clippings, and informational pamphlets ranging from the late 1920s-early 1990s.

Administrative History

Student Health Service at Indiana University were first organized in the early 20th century in response to a smallpox epidemic then plaguing the nation. The University decided against building a new structure devoted to health concerns. Instead, in 1902, they purchased an existing two-story suburban house on South Henderson Street, far removed from the University campus and other residences, which they repurposed as an isolation hospital for patients with contagious diseases; colloquially, this building came to be known as the "pest house."

The University appointed its first formal University physician, Dr. J.E.P. Holland, in 1914. His duties included conducting examinations for new students and those in athletic courses as well as providing free medical advice to students through consultations. Dr. Fernande Ida Julia Hachat began working as assistant University physician in 1917. The University physicians’ offices were located in Maxwell Hall’s basement until 1929, when they were moved to the Infirmary, a house on Forest Place. Contagious diseases, however, remained confined to the isolation hospital through the 1930s.

In 1939, a larger Health Center building was constructed near the current I.U. Chemistry Building to accommodate the health needs of a growing student population. This second facility was replaced by the present Health Center in 1965, which has seen a number of major renovations (1994, 1996, 2002) to acquire its current physical form.

Student Health Service seeks to provide high quality health care to the I.U. student and staff population with a goal of supporting optimal wellness required for the pursuit of academic goals. In its first several decades, the Health Center dealt with physical ailments and related issues. However, in 1979, Student Health Service merged with Counseling and Psychological Services to form a more cohesive unit addressing both the physical and mental wellbeing of patients. Specific services and departmental organization have changed over time, though services generally include: counseling & psychiatry, optometry, health & wellness, immunization/allergy, laboratory, medical clinic, pharmacy, physical therapy, travel clinic, sexual assault, women’s health, and x-ray.
