Abstract
William Hugh Jansen was a tutor,
lecturer, and instructor in English at Indiana University from 1937-1949. The
collection consists of composition papers from the students he tutored in the
Elementary Composition class from 1937-1938; the papers, written in response to
various predetermined topics, have extensive handwritten notes by Jansen.

Biographical Note
William Hugh Jansen was born on March 2, 1914 in Stamford, Connecticut.
He attended Stamford High School (CT), and obtained his BA from Wesleyan University
in 1935. He studied at Trinity College (CT), and obtained a teaching certificate
from Columbia University before travelling to Indiana University (IU) to obtain his
PhD in English and Folklore. Jansen studied the American novelist Thomas Wolfe. In
1951, Jansen went to the University of Ankara, Turkey as a Fulbright Scholar, where
he taught English Literature, American History, and Folklore.
Jansen was a teacher at Williston Academy in Easthampton, Massachusetts from
1935-1937. Jansen was a tutor of English at IU from 1937-1941, an Extension Lecturer
at IU from 1941-1942, and an Instructor in English from 1942-August of 1949. He was
an outspoken advocate for the academic, foreign exchange of students, often known to
lecture to faculty members and the community about these students, and the best ways
to teach and interact with them. After IU, Jansen worked in the Field Department of
the Graver Tank and Manufacturing Company in East Chicago, Indiana during the summer
of 1942. Jansen also went on to teach as an associate professor of English and
Folklore at the University of Kentucky, 1949-1979.
Professionally, Jansen was a member of the Modern Language Association (MLA), served
as a member of the Executive Council of the American Folklore Society in 1947,
served as the President of the Hoosier Folklore Society in 1946 and 1947, and was a
member of Sigma Nu. Jansen frequently wrote reviews and critiques of books and
articles in the English, Folklore, and literature fields, respectively. He was the
editor of Hoosier Folklore from 1947-1949.
William Hugh Jansen was married to Violet E. Schraft on September 10, 1937; they had
one daughter, Mary Marjorie Jansen.
