Abstract
The German American Conference was an international meeting of scholars facilitated by the
Indiana University Folklore Institute from November 1-3, 1988. The conference, titled “Folklore and Social Transformation:
A Dialogue of
German and American Folklorists,” focused on the social circumstances that influence the ways that folklorists have studied
folklore over
time. Folklore Institute faculty and staff including Richard Bauman, Linda Dégh, and Inta Carpenter received funding to invite
U.S. and
German folklorists to present at the conference. It was held directly after the 1988 Annual Meeting of the American Folklore
Society in
Boston, for which some German folklorists had already arranged to be in the United States.

Administrative History
The German American Conference was an international meeting of scholars facilitated by the Indiana University Folklore Institute
from
November 1-3, 1988. The conference, titled “Folklore and Social Transformation: A Dialogue of German and American Folklorists,”
focused on
the social circumstances that influence the ways folklorists have studied folklore over time. Folklore Institute faculty and
staff Richard Bauman,
Linda Dégh, and Inta Carpenter received significant funding to invite U.S. and German folklorists to present at the conference.
It was held
directly after the 1988 Annual Meeting of the American Folklore Society in Boston, for which some German folklorists had already
arranged to
be in the United States.
This project presents a successful attempt to bridge the geographical and intellectual divides between folklore studies in
the U.S., where the
term
folkloristics is often associated with the discipline, and folklore studies in Europe, where the term
ethnology is often associated with the discipline. Despite the terminological differences, similarities among U.S.
and German socioeconomic history in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries led to "striking similarities in research concerns"
for folklorists
in both nations, as noted in one of the funding proposals for this project. Conference participants addressed these similarities
in their presentations,
as they explored the applications of folklore in the news media, tourism studies, and notions of statehood.
Particularly valuable pieces of this collection are the printed copies of some of the conference papers, as this meeting did
not directly lead to the
publication of its proceedings. Although participants undoubtedly used their papers to inform future publication projects,
many of the materials
included here are not published anywhere else in the same format.
Arrangement
This collection is organized into two series. The first, which focuses on the conference that this collection describes, is
titled
Folklore and Social Transformation: A Dialogue of German and American Folklorists Conference - Indiana University, November 1-3, 1988.

Scope and Content Note
This collection is organized into two series. The first, which focuses on the conference that this collection archives, is
titled
Folklore and Social Transformation: A Dialogue of German and American Folklorists Conference - Indiana University, November 1-3, 1988.
The second, which focuses on those who planned and participated in the conference, is titled Conference Personnel.
The first series spans 1985-1989 and outlines the need to bring U.S. and German folklorists into dialogue. It includes correspondence,
programs, advertisements, budget
information, and the rough and final drafts of applications for funding. These files are arranged to reflect the conference's
evolution from idea to event. The second
series, spanning 1986-1989, includes correspondence, various CVs, abstracts, and papers by some of the conference participants.
These are arranged in alphabetical order
by last name. Most files are in English; some are in German.
