Biographical Note

Samuel Beckett, 1906-1989, author, was one of the twentieth century's most influential writers, known especially for his play Waiting for Godot.

Colin Duckworth, 1926-2012, was Professor of French at the University of Melbourne, Australia, having previously taught at the University of London and the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Scope and Content Note

The Duckworth mss., 1964-1988, consists of correspondence between author Samuel Beckett, 1906-1989, and Professor Colin Duckworth, 1926-2012. The correspondence was initiated by Duckworth in the Fall of 1964 as he began preparations for an edition of En attendant Godot while on the faculty of the University of London. During the course of preparing that edition he asked Beckett a series of questions about Godot which Beckett returned with his answers appended. Beckett agreed to Duckworth's seeing the original manuscript so that the two men met in Paris in April 1965. The edition was completed in late 1965, published in 1966. Duckworth sent copies to Beckett, who acknowledged receipt and commented that he was "reading [it] with much interest." The correspondence is sporadic after the Spring of 1967 and usually concerns getting permissions from Beckett for productions of his plays or social meetings when the Duckworths are in Paris. Most of the correspondence during the 1970s is addressed to Duckworth at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and in the 1980s at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Accompanying the original correspondence is a folder of transcriptions of Beckett's letters made by Duckworth himself with appended notes and commentary on each.
