Born in Randolph County, Ind., on April 11, 1827, Nathan R. Overman had few opportunities for formal education but overcame this handicap by
study at home. At eighteen years of age he began teaching.
In 1849, while engaged with his father in a brick- making
business, he began the study of law and for the next eleven years he alternated
teaching, farming, brick-making, and the study of his chosen profession. He married
Mary J. Cox on May 27,
1854. In 1861 he began the practice of law in
Tipton, Ind., and in 1878
he was elected judge of the Thirty-sixth Judicial Circuit.
He died in 1883.
